South Gloucestershire Council’s SportsPound programme has just seen the 400th participant sign-up to its free voucher scheme.

Since its launch at the start of 2016, the SportsPound has been helping people across South Gloucestershire to get active and find new sporting and recreational interests in their communities. The unique voucher scheme enables South Gloucestershire residents with low levels of physical activity to try out a range of activities with an aim to encourage healthier, more active lifestyles.

The SportsPound team are encouraging people in South Gloucestershire to make a healthy start to the New Year and try out a new activity for free. If you currently do less than 30 minutes of physical activity per week, are over 14-years-old and live in South Gloucestershire, you are eligible to receive SportsPound vouchers. These will give you access to eight free sessions at any of the activities listed on our website, including: aerobics, ante and postnatal fitness, badminton, bowls, cricket, football, martial arts, netball, rugby, running, swimming, tennis and yoga.

There is also a brand new SportsPound website www.southglos.gov.uk/sportspound, which makes it easy to find out about the variety of activities available in your area. You can now register online which makes it quick and simple to apply for SportsPound vouchers.

Environment & Community Services Chair Cllr Heather Goddard said: Simply register online via the new SportsPound website or at your local library and we will send you eight vouchers. You can either use them for eight sessions of the same activity, or try out different activities until you find something you enjoy, the choice is yours. Taking part won’t cost you anything, we just want people to increase their activity levels and meet others in their communities, whilst improving their health.”

If you want to speak to us about SportsPound and how it can help you, we have a team of SportsPound activators located in areas across South Gloucestershire. Please get in touch through our website to speak to your local activator.

South Gloucestershire’s SportsPound received National Lottery funding of £171,324 from Sport England. The scheme encourages local people aged 14-years-old and over, who do less than 30 minutes of physical activity a week, to grab the opportunity to get out and about, try new things and connect with others.
