Workshops are open to all carers – that’s anyone who provides care or support to a relative, friend or neighbour on a regular basis. By supporting carers and providing some fun and social time with others in similar situations, it is hoped that these workshops will pave the way for a permanent carers choir in South Gloucestershire.
The singing workshops offer people a chance to get together and learn some simple songs with fantastic harmonies, and will be led by music teacher and natural voice practitioner Indigo Craig. Indigo runs a series of community singing groups and her workshops encourage people to use their voice, sing and really enjoy the benefits of singing in harmony.
Following the taster sessions held through March, two singing groups shall be running on alternate weeks, and will see singers work towards a performance which will take place during Carers Week (10 to 14 June). Following this, the singing sessions shall continue at a charge of £2 per session.
Sue Jaques, Community Engagement Officer with South Gloucestershire Council, said: “You don’t need to read music, no experience of singing is required and there is no audition – the aim of the workshop is just to have some fun and enjoy singing. There is evidence that singing is beneficial for both physical and mental health, and hopefully these workshops will provide a positive and enjoyable experience for all.”
