Council apologises for waste left at Thornbury Leisure Centre

A South Gloucestershire Council spokesperson said: “We can confirm some bags of rubbish were recovered by council staff at Thornbury Leisure Centre over the weekend.
“The leisure centre was used by South Gloucestershire Council as the venue for the EU Referendum count last Thursday evening and Friday morning.
“The bags contained some general rubbish including some admin stationery from the count and from polling stations, which is usually disposed of after the count. We should stress that nothing in the bags was of a confidential nature. The information contained on poll cards reflects what is available for public inspection on the Electoral Register.
“Following the count, election staff were focused on dealing with the confidential information that the authority is required to keep by law. That information was taken directly from the count to a secure location immediately following declaration of the result.
“Usually, we would arrange for all the rubbish brought back from the polling stations to be disposed of. We apologise that on this occasion some bags were left behind. To reiterate, this was not of a confidential nature but we are reviewing our processes to ensure this doesn’t happen again.”
