Celebrate National Bookstart Week by going ‘under the sea’ every day

South Gloucestershire’s libraries are celebrating National Bookstart Week (6 to 12 June) with free drop-in story times and Rhymetime sessions for young children taking place every day.
There are ‘under the sea’ events taking place at various libraries every day throughout the week, with underwater themed colouring, crafts, stories and rhymes to enjoy, plus each child attending can collect a free mini-book ‘A Hole in the Bottom of the Sea’.
All children aged under four years old who use their own library card in any library across South Gloucestershire Libraries during National Bookstart Week (6 to 12 June) will also have a chance to win their own Bookstart Bear finger puppet.
Environment & Community Services Committee Chair Cllr Heather Goddard said: “Encouraging reading every day is the message behind National Bookstart Week. Reading every day helps your child begin to talk and learn about the world around them. Getting into the habit of sharing stories, books and rhymes every day, even for just 10 minutes, shows babies and young children that reading is a fun activity, while helping them bond with family. It’s a fun way to spend time together and is really easy to do – whether you are sharing a story or singing a rhyme.”
A staff member from St Chad’s Pre-school in Patchway, who brought children along to the family event last year, said: “It’s good for the children to realise that the library is so much more than just a place to explore and enjoy books, and that other activities can take place there such as the colouring and interacting with displays and the Bookstart Bear for example. We have also found that visiting the library on a weekly basis has helped the children.”
