Chair of South Gloucestershire Council Cllr Erica Williams has chosen two charities that she will raise funds for during her year in the civic role.
Cllr Williams has announced that the recipients of her fundraising efforts will be the Avon Valley Railway and Wild Place Project, both based in South Gloucestershire.
Cllr Williams said: “I am very much looking forward to the year ahead as Chair of South Gloucestershire Council. I will be supporting two South Gloucestershire-based charities during my term in office; the Avon Valley Railway and the Wild Place Project.
“I chose the Avon Valley Railway, not only because it is in my ward but because I worked with the previous Chairman Bob Hitchings MBE who sadly passed away earlier this year. He was focussed on not only restoring the station and engines but providing an exciting environment for all ages. All the staff are dedicated to ensuring that we embrace our heritage and they deserve the support.
“The Wild Place Project, my second charity was chosen, after I had the honour to open the new Cheetah exhibit on 14 May this year. Set in beautiful grounds, providing a unique experience for everyone. They rely on visitors and local sponsors to continue their work by raising awareness of those animals that are endangered. Everyone who works there are very driven and their work is inspirational and so very important.”
The Chair and Vice-Chair of the council are elected each year at the council’s annual meeting and represent the council at civic functions, as well as chairing full meetings of Council.
